Create a perfect CV: The order of the information

What information do you add to your resume? And in what order do you put the parts? We propose this order:

Step 1: Examine the vacancy

First of all: In order to be able to write a perfect CV, you first need to know what is required from you. Every company is different, no vacancies are the same. Even though they sometimes look suspiciously similar. Read the vacancy and especially the job description carefully. What position does the company have to apply for? Why does this vacancy stand out? Who are they looking for? What should that person be able to do? Try to see it like this: a company has a need or a problem. And it needs someone to offer a solution. It is your job to seamlessly align your resume with the employer’s request.

Step 2: Contact information

The content of this section speaks for itself. Give at least: name, e-mail address, telephone number, place of residence. Optional things are: link to your online portfolio, link to your LinkedIn profile. It is important that this information is correct. Please note that you adjust this information if, for example, you have moved or have a new phone number. It would be a shame if the recruiter can not reach you, right?

Step 3: Short introduction

Then briefly tell about your skills and work experience. Include how you want to help the company grow. You try, as it were, to attract the attention of the recruiter. Avoid cliches, use your own words, show who you are! How do you handle this? For example, by giving a short summary (4-6 bullet points) in which you describe your most important skills.

Step 4: Work experience

This is also the core of your resume. This proves that you have the skills and experience that are requested in the vacancy. And that you are therefore suitable for the job. Always start with the most recent work experience and work back into the past. For each employer, state the name of the company, the place, your job description and the dates you have worked there. Then you give a brief summary of your tasks (3-5 bullet points).

Questions that can help you:

  • What is the most important thing you have achieved in that job?
  • Main project you were on? And did you succeed?
  • What was your biggest challenge and how did you deal with it?
  • What has changed or happened in the company?

Step 5: Training

Your education is often the basis of your knowledge and interests. It is the starting point of your personal expertise. It is important to mention so. Have you followed several courses? Then put them in order of relevance for this job. Which training is most useful for this job?
